About Us

Enhancing the wonders of boating with beautifully designed marine hardware.

Create, Deliver, Impress

HISTORY:

Chatfield Engineering Limited was incorporated in 1948 by the late Mr. Roly Chatfield and was based in Devonport, Auckland, New Zealand.

Chatfield Marine as it is now known, started producing Stern Glands and Bearings for the local boat building industry, which at the time was unable to obtain marine hardware from overseas, due to government controlled import restrictions.

Over the years, Chatfield Marine grew to a point where the existing factory became too small and the business relocated in 1962 to a larger purpose built factory in Glenfield, Auckland.

From those humble early days Chatfield Marine has grown to export its products worldwide.
Chatfield Marine is now under the management of Rob Macready who continues to promote the long-standing philosophy of producing high quality Bronze and Stainless Steel marine hardware at a reasonable price.

Innovative design and manufacturing techniques help to keep Chatfield Marine at the forefront of the international marine industry.

CAPACITY:

Machining Operations

Chatfield Marine employs a small team of  highly skilled people. The staff work as a team to ensure the customers delivery dates are met and to produce the highest quality products their customers expect and demand.

The Machine Shop utilises CNC lathes - Takasawa TC30 and Harrison Alpha 1550XT Tech Lathe and a number of automatic bar feed and chucking production lathes.  Other equipment includes Italian Ursus 250 AC centre lathes, a WINDHO 12" chucked centre lathe along with several general purpose centre lathes. Single and multi-spindle drill presses for drilling operations, along with 2 production milling machines. Presses, a TOS horizontal borer with a 900 x 900 table, saws and sanders complement the lathe capacity.

Propellor shafts up to a maximum of 100mm in diameter can be machined.

FOUNDRY:

Chatfield Marine's non-ferrous foundry can cast a maximum of 250kg per pour, and achieve approximately 5 melts per day. Five different types of bronze can be cast, but the most prominent is HTB1 ( Manganese Bronze) – AB1, AB2, G1 and LG2.  A limited amount of aluminium casting is also completed.

The foundry moulders utilise the latest in hard-set moulding techniques along with the traditional recyclable green sand moulding processes.

Over the years the team at Chatfield Marine have cast many custom parts for private customers including specialist parts for SY Shenandoah. Our knowledge and skills see customers returning for replacement and new parts.
